What is a Tanpura ?
A tanpura is a traditional Indian string instrument that provides a continuous background drone for singers and instrumentalists. Instead of playing melodies, it creates a stable musical foundation that helps musicians stay in the correct pitch throughout practice and performance.
A traditional tanpura has four strings, usually tuned to Sa–Pa–Sa–Sa (or Sa–Ma–Sa–Sa, depending on the raga). This rich, resonant drone supports riyaaz, improves pitch accuracy, and enhances listening skills, making it an essential instrument for Indian classical music.
Tanpura vs. Shruti Box
Although the terms are often used interchangeably today, a tanpura and a shruti box are different instruments. A tanpura is a string instrument that produces a rich, continuous drone by plucking its strings, while a shruti box is a bellows- or electronic-based instrument that generates a steady reference pitch without strings.
For daily practice, many musicians now use an online tanpura, virtual tanpura, or shruti box online because they provide the same continuous drone needed for vocal practice and riyaaz. Whether you choose a tanpura or a shruti box, the goal remains the same — to help you stay in sur (pitch) and develop better intonation.
How To Use This Tanpura ?
- 1. Choose Your Scale (Sa)
Select the Sa that matches your natural singing or instrument pitch. Beginners can use a keyboard, harmonium, or a music teacher's guidance to identify the correct scale. - 2. Pick Your Drone (Sa–Pa or Sa–Ma)
Choose Sa–Pa for most ragas. Switch to Sa–Ma when practising ragas that use Madhyam (Ma) instead of Pancham (Pa). - 3. Adjust the Volume
Set the drone at a comfortable level so you can hear the reference pitch clearly without it overpowering your voice or instrument. - 4. Press Play and Begin Your Riyaaz
